Learn About Common Pests

Rat/Mouse

Description: There are two species of rat in Britain, Rattus Norvegicus (Brown Rat or Common Rat) and Rattus Rattus (Black Rat or Ship Rat, now rarely found in the UK). Common rats are known for causing damage and carrying diseases.

Signs: Signs can include droppings, gnaw marks, and scratching noises.

Prevention: Seal entry points and remove food sources.

Bed Bugs

Description: Bed bugs are small insects that feed on human blood, often found in mattresses, furniture, and cracks. They are prevalent due to increased travel, second-hand furniture, and pesticide tolerance. They are particularly common in multi-occupancy buildings.

Signs: Bite marks, blood spots on bedding, and dark fecal spots.

Prevention: Inspect second-hand furniture, reduce clutter, and seal cracks and crevices.

Cockroaches

Description: Cockroaches are closely related to crickets. Several species exist, including American, Brown Banded, German, Oriental, and Smokybrown. They can spread diseases and contaminate food.

Signs: Visible insects, droppings resembling coffee grounds or black pepper, and unpleasant odors.

Prevention: Maintain cleanliness, store food properly, and seal entry points.

Ants

Description: The commonest species that invades houses is the Black Garden Ant. All ants have distinct body divisions and elbowed antennae. It is the foraging worker ants that invade buildings in search of food, attracted to sweet foodstuffs.

Signs: Ant trails, visible ants, and small piles of dirt or debris indicating nests.

Prevention: Seal entry points, clean up spills immediately, and store food in airtight containers.

Wasps

Description: Wasps are stinging insects with complex social structures. They build nests in various locations, including hollow trees or occasionally houses. Hornets are twice the size of common wasps.

Signs: Visible wasps, buzzing sounds, and nests.

Prevention: Seal cracks and crevices, cover food and drinks outdoors.

Squirrel Control

Description: Squirrels can enter lofts and attics, causing noise and damage to insulation and wiring.

Signs: Scratching noises in lofts, droppings, chewed wires or insulation.

Prevention: Seal entry points, trim tree branches away from roof, use squirrel-proof bird feeders.

Moth Treatment

Description: Moths whose grubs feed on stored food (like Flour Moths) or natural fabrics (like House Moths and Clothes Moths). Larvae cause the damage by eating materials like cereals, dried fruit, nuts, flour products, and natural textiles.

Signs: Visible moths, larvae, webbing, or damage to food and fabrics.

Prevention: Store food in airtight containers, clean regularly, and use moth traps.
